New Book "New York Reawakens: A Summer of Hope"

New Book "New York Reawakens: A Summer of Hope"

In June of 2021, almost on the day when New York was set to reopen I arrived in the city to film my course on documentary style drawing. For two weeks I roamed the city with my sketchbook trying to record the spirit of energy and hope that filled New York.

I witnesssed the return of live music, joggers panting in its great parks, street parades, friends and families coming together again — ordinary moments became extraordinary in the context of the pandemic.

I am pleased to announce the result of this visual investigation is a hard-cover book, a close replica of my sketchbook that is will hopefully see the light of day in November. The book is a result of our collaboration with Gabi Campanario, the founder of Urban Sketching movement who, with this book, is inaugurating his new publishing endeavor Sketcher Press.

Here is where we can use your help! We are running a Kickstarter campaign to help us bring this book to life. There are 10 days left to support this project and be one of the first ones to receive a copy of the book.

New York Reawakens Spread

If all goes to plan I will be presenting "New York Reawakens" in Clermont-Ferrand Rendez-vous Carnet de Voyage November 18-20, 2022. Drop by to say hello–I will also be teaching a workshop on composition.

Travel Sketching in Costa Brava
Travel Sketching in Costa Brava, Spain

Exciting opportunity for the fans of travel drawing!  I will be leading Travel Sketching Workshops in Costa Brava in May 14-21, 2023 . The trip is organized by a tour guide company French Escapade, and I am excited to have them take care of all travel logistics, so we can focus on drawing, learning, and experiencing this beautiful corner of the world together. We will explore fishing villages, medieval towns, and botanical gardens while learning how to put together a memorable book of drawings that capture the essence of each place.

Camino de Santiago and Compostela Ilustrada
Camino de Santiago and Compostela Ilustrada
Last September I was commissioned by the Tourism of Galicia and Compostela Ilustrada to walk and show the ancient pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago in drawings. The project was a collaboration with the local Galician artist and a videographer and results in us producing several dozens of post card size drawings and a short film. The drawings will be on display at the Pilgrimage museum in Santiago de Compostela starting early November.

In a few weeks I am heading to Compostela Ilustrada Festival for the inauguration of the exhibit, to teach workshops and present a talk on this unique way of walking the ancient pilgrimage. If you in Galicia the first week of November be sure to check this out.
Looking Ahead to 2023
Closer to home in Portland my Urban Sketching classes at the the Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon Society of Artists continue this fall and winter. I will kick off 2023 with a winter online workshop series for beginners and as soon as it is warm and dry enough to sketch outside we will be back in the on-location workshop series in the spring.

I am working on plans to lead travel sketching workshops in Istanbul and Lummi Island  in the summer of 2023. Keep an eye on the website and this newsletter for accouncements soon.

Happy fall and feel free to drop me a line if you have a question.
